Making Money With Website

As part of the ongoing Mashable Awards, we’re taking a closer look at each of the nomination categories. This is “Must-Follow Non-Profit.” Be sure to nominate your favorites and join us for the Gala in Las Vegas! Sponsorships are available. Please contact sponsorships@mashable.com for more information.

When it comes to social good, the name of the game is creating or inspiring change, and often with limited resources. That’s why social media is so important for non-profit organizations. By allowing organizations to reach more people with less money, social media has become an integral part of the non-profit toolbox.

Groups are using social media a variety of ways, from raising money to engaging with constituents on personal and meaningful levels. The most important thing social media offers for non-profits, though, is a highly effective channel to spread awareness about their cause. “Having 10 million people is more important than $10 million,” Change.org founder and CEO Ben Rattray told Mashable recently. “For advocacy you need to mobilize people, and the web helps you mobilize people like never before.”

There are any number of worthy non-profit organizations utilizing social media in new and interesting ways; below are five that caught our eye this year as must-follow groups. Please share in the comments any other non-profits you think deserve a follow and nominate them for a Mashable Award.

1. Brooklyn Museum

More than just a great art museum, the Brooklyn Museum is one of the most social media-savvy organizations on the planet. From a mobile website that lets visitors tag items in the gallery (which, in turn, helps to organize the museum’s vast, 94,000-record online collection) to a Foursquareclass="blippr-nobr">Foursquare account that offers tips for things to do in the neighborhood and rewards mayors with special parties and other offers, the Brooklyn Museum is hip to the latest social media trends.

What’s really great about the museum, which can also be found on Tumblrclass="blippr-nobr">Tumblr, Flickrclass="blippr-nobr">Flickr, Facebookclass="blippr-nobr">Facebook, YouTubeclass="blippr-nobr">YouTube, and Twitterclass="blippr-nobr">Twitter, is that the staff is not afraid to innovate and try new things. They’re constantly testing out new social platforms and innovating new ways to use their current social media accounts. They even share the code behind some of their best ideas on GitHub!

2. Sesame Street Workshop

Sesame Street Workshop is the non-profit organization behind the beloved children’s classic television series Sesame Street, among others. And despite being 41 years old, these cats — er, Muppets — really know social media.

You can find your favorite Sesame Street residents on Twitter and Facebook (characters like Elmo, Big Bird and Oscar have their own class='blippr-nobr'>Pagesclass="blippr-nobr">pages). Where the Workshop really excels, however, is YouTube. Sesame Street Workshop has made its biggest social media splash on YouTube, with exclusive content that often features celebrity guests and frequent parodies of other digital media memes, such as the Google search stories or the Old Spice Guy, that prove the people behind Sesame Street know their stuff.

3. WildlifeDirect

Founded in 2006 by noted African conservationist Dr. Richard Leakey, WildlifeDirect aims to save endangered animals in Africa. The organization helps local conservation groups around Africa raise funds, awareness and support for their conservation projects.

WildlifeDirect can be found on many of the usual social media networks, such as Twitter and Facebook, but where it really shines is blogging. The organization has set up an active blog network of more than 100 field blogs penned by conservation groups across Africa. The blogs are one of the main drivers of donations to the conservation work that the organization supports, but they also offer a fascinating look into the struggle to save endangered species in some of the most diverse and threatened areas on Earth.

4. Kids Are Heroes

Founded in 2008 by Gabe O’Neill and his then 9-year-old daughter, MaryMargaret, Kids Are Heroes is a non-profit group that has the admirable goal of inspiring children to get involved in the act of giving back. The website offers profiles of more than 100 kids who have at a young age (some as young as 5-years-old!) had a meaningful impact on their communities and the world — whether by training diabetic service dogs, donating books to low-income families, or raising millions of dollars for out-of-work war veterans. The organization’s message is loud and clear: Kids can make a difference.

Along with the inspiring stories, the Kids Are Heroes website allows children to send “shout outs” to one another, and the group maintains active and engaging Twitter and Facebook accounts.

5. Darius Goes West

Darius Weems and the Darius Goes West project is a force to be reckoned with. Afflicted with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) — a genetic degenerative muscular disease that killed his older brother — Darius and 11 of his friends set out six years ago to travel across America with the ultimate goal of getting Darius’ wheelchair customized on MTV’s Pimp My Ride. The group filmed that trip and turned it into the much-celebrated documentary film, Darius Goes West.

Six years later, Darius Goes West has become a movement — non-profit vehicle to raise money and awareness for the search for a DMD cure that now seems so tantalizingly close. Darius, who continues to defy the odds, recently turned 21 years old and the Darius Goes West crew continue to come up with innovative ways to spread their message and raise money using social media. From raising money through Facebook widgets to inspiring people to do crazy things in the name of charity, Darius Goes West is a must-follow cause for their innovation and unflappable humor.

Politico reports:

“Huffington has styled herself as a ‘new media’ maven and an expert on the effective deployment of news and celebrity on the Internet in the service of political ends,” says the complaint. “As will be shown at trial, Huffington’s and Lerer’s image with respect to the Huffington Post is founded on false impressions and inaccuracies: They presented the ‘new media’ ideas and plans of Peter Daou and James Boyce as their own in order to raise money for the website and enhance their image, and breached their promises to work with Peter and James to develop the site together."...

Democrats need “to develop a dominant position within the Internet,” Daou said during an early meeting about the site, according to the complaint. “It is a system pushing the message, not just for fundraising,” he allegedly said.

Huffington called the charge of stolen ideas and broken deals “a completely absurd, ludicrous supposition” from men whom she’d turned down for jobs on the site.
This might be interesting  — a stark presentation of the Huffington Post's political agenda. But, really, I'm not too impressed with this notion of stealing "the idea" for a business. Was there a contract or a partnership or not? And it's not much of an idea anyway — a "dominant" website with a political slant. The trick is to do it well and get the traffic. Anyone could try to do it. Huffington did it. Possibly because she picked the right people to work with, and it wasn't Boyce and Daou.

The lawsuit touches on the same legal frontiers of intellectual property and deal-making as did a famous lawsuit Facebook settled in 2008. The success of the suit, which seeks unspecified damages, will hinge on whether Daou and Boyce can prove they had offered “something more specific than a generalized notion” and that Huffington had agreed to make them part of the deal, said Dan Kornstein, a prominent New York litigator.
What is the "more specific" thing? The complaint says the idea was for "a collective of blogs by notable personalities, non-partisan news aggregation, issue-specific web pages, scoops and exclusives derived from the founders’ personal relationships with Democratic Party and media insiders, and online community-building, with the purpose of driving Internet traffic and ‘page views’ for politically progressive messaging.” I'm not impressed.

Making Money Off Youtube

On Friday the woman who narrated the Domino's booger video that made national headlines plead guilty and received sentencing.

The video shot in April 2009 showed her and a fellow male worker doing disgusting things to the food in the kitchen. The guy stuffed cheese up his nose before he put it on a sandwich, farting on a piece of salami, and sneezing on cheese sticks, and then disguising the boogers underneath the cheese and boxing it up.

The two workers testified that no customers ever actually ate the food.

The woman plead guilty to "Distribution of certain food at Halloween and all other times prohibited," a lesser charge than the felony food adulteration charge she was first hit with. The statute makes it unlawful to "...cause to be placed in a position of human accessibility, any food or eatable substance which that person knows to contain: (1) Any noxious or deleterious substance, material or article which might be injurious to a person's health or might cause a person any physical discomfort..."

The charge carries a max 120-day suspended sentence, but the judge gave her 45 days and 18 months probation. While on probation she can't work in any kind of restaurant or food or drink serving establishment. She also has to do 200 hours of community service.

She was also told not to talk about the incident to anyone else and is forbidden from making any money off any interviews having to do with it.

Before sentencing her, the judge told the woman, "The scary thing is this goes on in other places that you don't know about, and it makes you wonder what you're getting."

Emma Watson was a guest on the Late Show last night. She was cute and charming as usual, and you could tell that she was a little nervous but she powered through it and did a great job. It wasn’t her first stint on Letterman and she did as nice a job in her last appearance as well. Emma told some cute stories about her experiences as a coed in America, where she’s had some problems being understood by her classmates. She was wearing a form fitting black and red sequin dress that was just the right length. Someone commented that this is the dress she should have worn to the premiere, and I agree, it was much better than her satin sheath.

On her pixie cut

Most women get their hair cut when they’re going through a breakup, and I was going through the Harry Potter breakup and it was time for a new look.

On if she made a lot of money

Nothing really worth mentioning, no big deal… they totally ripped me off.

On her issues communicating at college

I didn’t realize just how big the culture gap is… Day to day there are things I am unable to communicate. I really needed what I would call a ‘plaster’… I was bleeding quite heavily. I was running around saying ‘I need a plaster…’ It took five or six minutes to work out that what I needed was a band aid.

Dave - That says something about American kids, they know you’re bleeding and they can’t put two and two together.

Emma - The most embarrassing one is that I had no idea, and please excuse me, that you guys call [lower voice] a condom a rubber. My version of a rubber is like an eraser, so I’ve done that, I’ve very loudly asked for a rubber… that was embarrassing.

On if the kids bug her at school because she’s famous

They’re all too cool for that.

When I was in college I dated a British guy and once went back with him to England for a couple a weeks. I was just getting the hang of the local vernacular when I tried to use it out by telling some of his friends that we had to leave a club because I was having a “snog.” I meant to say that I was having a “strop,” which means you’re grumpy, but got it confused with a similar word I’d just learned ,”snog,” which is slang for a kiss. So they all thought for a moment that I was making out with someone else at the bar and got busted by my boyfriend. Now I’m married to someone that speaks an entirely different language and am often making (what I consider minor) pronunciation errors that can make average words sound very dirty. That snog/strop thing can’t compare to me trying to say “follow” (folgen) and ending up saying “f*cking” (vögeln) instead. So I pretty much try not to use the German word for follow - or for humid, but that’s another story. Damn umlauts.

You can watch Emma’s entire Letterman appearance on YouTube (it won’t embed here.) She tells the rubber story at 4:50 and does an American accent at 6:40. A clip from Deathly Hallows is at 8:30. It looks better than earlier clips I’ve seen. I lost my passion for HP after the Half Blood Prince, but I’ll probably see this one.
